If you've been watching Skating on Thin Ice and fantasizing about a career as an ice skater, or you just want to learn to glide around the ice for fun but aren't sure how to get started, Synchro Boards is a warm and friendly online resource for skaters. If you have a question, comment or request - no matter how simple - the members of the Synchro Boards forum will be happy to help you out.

I asked the most basic of questions - What is Synchronized Skating?

Divine_Diavolo says: "Synchronized skating is basically skating with a group of 12-20 skaters. It is quite similar to the marching soldier routine that the Disney on Ice Team showed the celebs on TV. Although MUCH faster, more flowing, and much more interesting moves. If you have a fast net connection try this site here. These are some of the teams who just competed at Worlds 2005 Sweden (including Team Australia - Fire on Ice from NSW)."

Prusie Says: "CJ, when it comes to silly questions.. People could post them just about anywhere on SynchroBoards and get a warm responce from someone who read what was written..We all have silly questions of our own that we ask from time to time.. and there is such a lot of people who use this board from all over the world that you get some amazing answers!"

Much of the discussion at Synchro Boards over the past few weeks has addressed the lack of promotion for the show, which runs for only 4 weeks - barely getting a momentum going before it will be over! While the show utilized the resources of the skating community, little information can be found about how the viewing public can become involved.

The synchro boards team recommends hunting for ice skating rinks the old fashioned way, by letting your fingers do the walking in the Yellow Pages ... or you could just click this link straight to the Ice Skating results for Australian rinks & associations ...

http://www.yellowpages.com.au/search/postSearchEntry.do?businessType=ice+skating&businessName=&locationClue=

Oz_sk8_mum has been fortunate to attend some of the training sessions and the final performance today, and had this to say about the Celebs involved:

"I just want to make a few points from someone who has kinda been on the inside for the last few months. The Celebes are a great bunch of people....Yes even Deni..she is NOT like how she appears on the show..she's a great big kid at heart and my kids had a ball with her, James Blundel is SUCH is nice guy and Vince always the joker must have the Biggest heart .. and how about Belinda Green..how many Grandma's take to the ice these guys were really into this show .... this is a group of people who really WANTED to get the Skating thing right! And while they may not make the 2010 Olympics THAT was never the aim .. they achieved their aim.. so for all the sour pusses who sat in Canteens and bagged the whole idea (and they did .. we heard them!!) YOU LOSE .. This show was a winner for our sport!"

All in all, the show has certainly brought ice skating into the spotlight, with weekend sessions at ice skating rinks filling up with families stepping onto the ice for the first time, past skaters renewing their passion for the sport, and rinks putting on extra sessions to accommodate the growing demand.
Don't forget to be watching Skating On Thin Ice this sunday for the final episode, and drop by Synchro Boards (www.synchroboards.com) to chat with Australia's synchronized skating community.

What is Synchronized Skating?

So you've been watching Skating on Thin Ice and listening to the lingo but you still have no idea what they are talking about? Here's some of the basic terms, taken from Sk8Stuff (http://www.sk8stuff.com/f_synch/basic_formations.htm) that you might hear in Skating on Thin Ice!

Line
The most basic of formations. In the line formation, skaters line up in a straight line, each skater holding onto the next skater in one of a variety of basic ways. The line advances forward or to the side. The line can contain any number of skaters. Holds may change as the line advances. Skaters may skate forwards or back. Sometimes parallel lines are used.

Circle
In a circle formation, skaters line up in a closed circle shape. Each skater is attached by holds to each adjacent skater. Skaters may face along the circumference of the circle, or along its radius. The circle generally rotates around its center, and often advances across the ice while rotating. Skaters may skate forward or backward. For variety, circles are sometimes "doubled" (2 concentric circles), rotating the same direction or in contrary directions.

Block
The block formation consists of a number of "lines" moving together. In general, each the skaters of each line (or "row") hold each other, but the succeeding rows are not connected to each other. In most rectangular blocks, each row will contain the same number of skaters, but sometimes this is varied to suit the size of the team. As the block advances, skaters maintain their individual positions, and the rows and columns should remain "straight".

Wheel
A wheel is a formation that is composed of (usually) straight "spokes" rotating around a common center. The number of spokes can vary - typically anywhere from 1 (a straight line) to about 6, depending on team size and the choreography of the program. Skaters maintain holds while the wheel rotates. Often the wheel advances across the ice while rotating. The diagram below shows a 4 spoke wheel.

Intersection
The intersection is a maneuver in which 2 forms "cross" on the ice. In its simplest form, 2 moving straight lines approach each other, either forward or backward. Just before they hit each other, the skaters drop their arms and pass between the skaters of the other line. After the pass-thru, all skaters re-join into their lines. The passthroughs can be done from a variety of basic formations -- lines, blocks, wheels, etc. Often maneuvers such as lunges, spirals, etc enhance the intersection. The diagram below shows a simple intersection of 2 lines.

Eggbeater
The "Eggbeater" is an example of 2 rotating wheels that "mesh" like gears. Typically performed from 3 or 4 spoke pinwheels in close proximity, each wheel rotates and the spokes pass without striking each other. This is hardest when done close, and fast. Regardless, it is an exciting maneuver. The illustration below shows 2 meshing 3-spoke wheels.
