Synchro Boards - An online skating forum

If you've been watching Skating on Thin Ice and fantasizing about a career as an ice skater, or you just want to learn to glide around the ice for fun but aren't sure how to get started, Synchro Boards is a warm and friendly online resource for skaters. If you have a question, comment or request - no matter how simple - the members of the Synchro Boards forum will be happy to help you out.

I asked the most basic of questions - What is Synchronized Skating?

Divine_Diavolo says: "Synchronized skating is basically skating with a group of 12-20 skaters. It is quite similar to the marching soldier routine that the Disney on Ice Team showed the celebs on TV. Although MUCH faster, more flowing, and much more interesting moves. If you have a fast net connection try this site here. These are some of the teams who just competed at Worlds 2005 Sweden (including Team Australia - Fire on Ice from NSW)."

Prusie Says: "CJ, when it comes to silly questions.. People could post them just about anywhere on SynchroBoards and get a warm responce from someone who read what was written..We all have silly questions of our own that we ask from time to time.. and there is such a lot of people who use this board from all over the world that you get some amazing answers!"

Much of the discussion at Synchro Boards over the past few weeks has addressed the lack of promotion for the show, which runs for only 4 weeks - barely getting a momentum going before it will be over! While the show utilized the resources of the skating community, little information can be found about how the viewing public can become involved.

The synchro boards team recommends hunting for ice skating rinks the old fashioned way, by letting your fingers do the walking in the Yellow Pages ... or you could just click this link straight to the Ice Skating results for Australian rinks & associations ...

Oz_sk8_mum has been fortunate to attend some of the training sessions and the final performance today, and had this to say about the Celebs involved:

"I just want to make a few points from someone who has kinda been on the inside for the last few months. The Celebes are a great bunch of people....Yes even Deni..she is NOT like how she appears on the show..she's a great big kid at heart and my kids had a ball with her, James Blundel is SUCH is nice guy and Vince always the joker must have the Biggest heart .. and how about Belinda Green..how many Grandma's take to the ice these guys were really into this show .... this is a group of people who really WANTED to get the Skating thing right! And while they may not make the 2010 Olympics THAT was never the aim .. they achieved their aim.. so for all the sour pusses who sat in Canteens and bagged the whole idea (and they did .. we heard them!!) YOU LOSE .. This show was a winner for our sport!"

All in all, the show has certainly brought ice skating into the spotlight, with weekend sessions at ice skating rinks filling up with families stepping onto the ice for the first time, past skaters renewing their passion for the sport, and rinks putting on extra sessions to accommodate the growing demand.

Don't forget to be watching Skating On Thin Ice this sunday for the final episode, and drop by Synchro Boards (www.synchroboards.com) to chat with Australia's synchronized skating community.

What is Synchronized Skating?

So you've been watching Skating on Thin Ice and listening to the lingo but you still have no idea what they are talking about? Here's some of the basic terms, taken from Sk8Stuff (http://www.sk8stuff.com/f_synch/basic_formations.htm) that you might hear in Skating on Thin Ice!

Line
The most basic of formations. In the line formation, skaters line up in a straight line, each skater holding onto the next skater in one of a variety of basic ways. The line advances forward or to the side. The line can contain any number of skaters. Holds may change as the line advances. Skaters may skate forwards or back. Sometimes parallel lines are used.

Circle
In a circle formation, skaters line up in a closed circle shape. Each skater is attached by holds to each adjacent skater. Skaters may face along the circumference of the circle, or along its radius. The circle generally rotates around its center, and often advances across the ice while rotating. Skaters may skate forward or backward. For variety, circles are sometimes "doubled" (2 concentric circles), rotating the same direction or in contrary directions.

Block
The block formation consists of a number of "lines" moving together. In general, each the skaters of each line (or "row") hold each other, but the succeeding rows are not connected to each other. In most rectangular blocks, each row will contain the same number of skaters, but sometimes this is varied to suit the size of the team. As the block advances, skaters maintain their individual positions, and the rows and columns should remain "straight".

Wheel
A wheel is a formation that is composed of (usually) straight "spokes" rotating around a common center. The number of spokes can vary - typically anywhere from 1 (a straight line) to about 6, depending on team size and the choreography of the program. Skaters maintain holds while the wheel rotates. Often the wheel advances across the ice while rotating. The diagram below shows a 4 spoke wheel.

Intersection
The intersection is a maneuver in which 2 forms "cross" on the ice. In its simplest form, 2 moving straight lines approach each other, either forward or backward. Just before they hit each other, the skaters drop their arms and pass between the skaters of the other line. After the pass-thru, all skaters re-join into their lines. The passthroughs can be done from a variety of basic formations -- lines, blocks, wheels, etc. Often maneuvers such as lunges, spirals, etc enhance the intersection. The diagram below shows a simple intersection of 2 lines.

Eggbeater
The "Eggbeater" is an example of 2 rotating wheels that "mesh" like gears. Typically performed from 3 or 4 spoke pinwheels in close proximity, each wheel rotates and the spokes pass without striking each other. This is hardest when done close, and fast. Regardless, it is an exciting maneuver. The illustration below shows 2 meshing 3-spoke wheels.

Some more mixed Caps

The group gather on the couch for feedback in the first episode, before Peter Everett injures his ankle and ends his ice skating days

There's more to skating than ... well, skating! These celebs are put through a strenuous yoga routine to get their muscles and joints ready for another day of bumps and crashes on the ice.

Imogen looks worried as the coach tells her how much work she has to do to make it to the final performance.
Uh Ooh, Imogen has her first injury - so bad, it required a whole bandaid! Imogen thanks the heavens for strong coffee!

Celebrities skating on thin ice

We've had celebrities on the dance floor, celebrities losing weight and celebrities in the circus.

And now comes the next stage in this new genre of reality television - celebrities on ice.

Skating on Thin Ice is a new program hosted by stripper-turned TV personality Jamie Durie putting nine novice ice-skaters to the test and debuts on the Nine Network this Sunday.

The show features nine celebrities, who are taught various skating routines and must perform in a live ice-skating spectacular for the final episode.

In the first instalment, which airs at 6.30pm (AEST) on Sunday, the amateur skaters will be put through a skate camp led by former Olympic figure skater, Liz Cain.

They will also train with Disney on Ice performance director Sue Brodie and the Sydney Dance Company.

And who better to feature as one of the celebrities in the program than the woman who went from frying fish and chips to an instant star after winning reality show Big Brother, Regina Bird.

Bird became the first female to win the Australian series of the program in 2003.

But if she thought lasting in a household with 14 other people for three months was tough, it's nothing compared to trying to stand up in a pair of skates on an ice rink.

"It's really hard work the ice-skating," admitted Bird after rehearsals at Sydney's Fox Studios this week.

"They reckon I'm one of the most improved compared to when I first got on there. I've really surprised myself how well that I have done."

Although Bird was happy with her performance, she wasn't booking a trip to Turin for next year's Winter Olympics just yet.

She said she was "having a ball" filming the show, which also features television presenter Dave Whitehill, country music crooner James Blundell, singer Deni Hines and model and actress Imogen Bailey.
Whitehall, who is a presenter on Nine's kid's shows Hot Source and So Fresh, hadn't ice-skated before. But he says he had a clear advantage.
"I was pretty lucky because of (my) surfing and skateboarding and all that sort of thing my balance was there," he said.

He said he was doing the show to challenge himself with his fitness.
"I really don't care if I hit the deck," Whitehill joked.

He said the team was learning to perform different routines such as spins, jumping and landing backwards on the ice.

"But at the moment we're not looking too elegant," he laughed.

A former Cleo magazine bachelor, Whitehill insisted he wasn't planning on doing a Tom Williams style strip tease on the ice for his final performance.

"I think I might try and steer clear of that," he said. "I think they've already done a promo shoot at the beginning.

"I thought everyone was going to be doing it that way, but then I found out it was only Imogen and I."

The team on Kerrie Anne

Deni Hines, Imogen Bailey and David Whitehill on Mornings with Kerrie Anne. The team chats live with Kerrie Anne 2 days before the show goes to air on Channel 9!

Regional 9 gets ready for the Ice!

SKATING ON THIN ICE
Premiere New Series on NBN Television Sunday 6.30pm.

Jamie Durie puts nine well-known Australians on ice in a cool challenge with a magical surprise in Skating on Thin Ice. As the host of Skating on Thin Ice, Durie has his work cut out with just a few weeks to turn these celebrities from L-platers into gun skaters as they train to perform in an ice spectacular beyond their wildest dreams.

Seven of the nine performers have never set foot on the ice, so the real challenge for designer Peter Everett, Hot Source presenter David Whitehill, former Australia’s Funniest Home Videos host Kim Kilbey, singer Deni Hines, model Imogen Bailey, singer James Blundell, former beauty queen Belinda Green, Big Brother winner Reggie Bird and comedian Vince Sorrenti could just be staying upright, let alone learning the moves that will earn them a place in the world’s most famous ice skating show – Disney on Ice.

Beginning with an intensive “Skate Camp”, these ice novices will put their fitness and agility to the test in a gruelling program led by former Olympic figure skater, Liz Cain.

In preparation for their final performance, Disney on Ice performance director Sue Brodie, also known as “The Ice Queen”, will give the troupe critiques on their progress each week. Any celebrities who do not meet the high Disney performance standard by week four might not be able to perform with the company.

The cast will train at the ice rink in the recently renamed ‘Entertainment Quarter’, adjacent to the Fox Film Studios in Sydney and their final performance will take place on Friday, July 22 in Newcastle, where Disney on Ice is scheduled to perform. In between icy training sessions, the group will take part in flexibility and dance workshops with the Sydney Dance Company as well as general fitness training led by the five ice skating coaches under Liz Cain’s direction.

The Skating on Thin Ice stars will also have an added incentive to perform, with the opportunity to take part in special ice challenges to raise money for CanTeen, the Australian organisation for young people living with cancer.
